Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the garbage from one of the jury. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college.
